Veganism is the MOST HELPFUL change you can do in your lifestyle to help against environmental destruction, animal cruelty and for your own health.
Things that can be changed through a vegan diet
Animal cruelty could be stopped
98% of all animals, including organic farming, come from factory farming.
Factory farming
Factory farming wants to make the production as cheap as possible. That way the animals live together on smallest spaces and get a lot of antibioticum and get robbed of their instincts through tranquilizer. To not injure one another teeth, horns and beaks get cut without anesthetic. For example the shortening of horns in cows is a common practice also in organic farming. Through the horns run nerves which makes it really painful for the cows.
Fear of death
Animals have really good noses. They can smell the death and they know what's gonna happen to them before they enter the slaughterhouse. They are pressed into transportations without water and food with massive temperature changes. You can see the fear in their eyes HERE.
The slaughter:
The animals are supposed to numbed for the act of killing. That is done by electroshocks. Around every 4th animal isn't numbed correctly and is concious during the process of slaughter. While slaughtery the animal gets hung upside down with a hook through its leg and gets his throat cut to bleed. The animal dies from blood loss. There is no possibility in doing this "humanely".
What does organic mean then?
Organic doesn't have to mean green grass and much more space as many think. It can happen but only if circumstances allow it. In fact organic is not so much about animal husbendry. The law holds things very vague, for example this is a phrase from the EU law "any suffering, including mutilation, shall be kept to a minimum during the entire life of the animal, including at time of slaughter." How can it be kept in minimum if mutilations and painful slaughter are still allowed?
Organic has more consequences for what the animals eat. With organic meat the animals are only fed with natural food and withouth GMOs, genetic modified organisms, but they suffer just as non-organic animals.
Why vegetarian isn't enough I explain HERE.
Our planet can be saved
You can protect the climate:
Because 51% of all greenhouse gases emitted around the world come from livestock farming, going vegan is the number 1 way of diminishing greenhouse gases. Due to a study, you can diminsh greenhouse gases for your own life by going vegan 42%. That is FAR more than you could save if you'd never use any transportations again.
You can use less landmasses for agriculture:
For 1 kg of cow steak the cow needs 16kg of animal food. A cow needs way more kilos of food than comes out of it. That means in numbers that a vegan diet uses only 1/18th (!!!) of landmasses for agriculture as a meat based diet!
You can save the rainforest:
To produce all that animal food tropical forests are being destroyed. The famous "soy fields", often an argument against veganism, are actually used 90% for animal food. Through going vegan you could save 40% of the destruction of the rainforest.
You can stop water waist:
The production of a single burger needs as much water as you need to shower for 100 days. Why even bother showering quickly, if just ONE BURGER equals you having 100 long showers?
You can stop water pollution:
Meat industry is the leading cause for fresh water pollution, and therefore mainly responsible for ocean dead-zones and great barrier reef die-off.
You can solve the problem of world hunger:
You need 16kg grains for making 1kg of meat. Those grains are often produced in the countries that have hunger problems. If you'd use those grains to feed humans instead of animals, we could stop the fact that every 5 seconds a human child dies from hunger.
Eating vegan doesn't mean you are a better human, but you are definetely making less damage!
You can be much more healthy
Cholesterol:
The number one reason for death in america is heart disease. One reason for this is that the cholesterol levels are too high. Plants have no cholesterol, it only occurs in animal products. Accordingly, the cholesterol level in a vegan diet drops drastically and often in the healthy range without any medication.
Many many other diseases can be eliminated or effectively combated.
People who eat animal products have a 40% higher risk of developing cancer and also a higher risk of other diseases such as stroke, appendicitis, osteoporosis, arthritis and diabetes! A vegan diet brings advantages in all those diseases.
Weight:
With a vegan diet change, you will find out after a period of time, provided that you eat a wholesome diet and consume few finished products, that your weight will level off all by itself!
In general...
... you are going to feel less full after eating, less tired and more concentrated on a vegan diet. :)
Things to consider
Of course, the vegan diet must be balanced, and must not consist only of finished products to be healthy. If you are in a vegan diet you should pay attention to the following minerals: iron, zinc, vitamins B12 and B2 and to take care of sufficient intake of omega-3 fatty acids. You can do that by supplements or by injection, better talk to your doctor about that!
Protein for life:
If you are worried about not getting enough proteins: There are plenty of examples of healthy vegan bodybuilders out there. It is possible to get all for the body essential amino acids through a vegan diet. Therefore your diet has to consist of all the essential elements: legumes, fruits, vegetables, grain, seeds and nuts. A combintation of those gives your body enough protein!
